I'm not particularly fussy with my hair - my haircare routine consists of shampooing, combing, towel/air-drying, and occasionally using an oil or hair treatment on the ends. I stick to head & shoulders out of habit more than preference, and on a day when I don't feel like shampooing my hair, I curl it with a straightener and spray a bit of dry shampoo and/or hairspray. I hadn't found hair products that worked well enough or that I liked enough to be fussed.
Enter Function of Beauty.
I first read about Function of Beauty through Kelsey's review. I thought it was an innovative concept - customized and personalized haircare formulated to your hair profile and needs. When Function of Beauty reached out to me, I was more than eager to try my own products and share the experience with you all!
Three words: beautiful, minimal, functional.
The products are formulated with 99% natural ingredients, free of parabens and sulfates, and are cruelty-free and 100% vegan.
The site guides you through four steps - building your hair profile, selecting up to five hair goals, customizing your formulas' name, color, and fragrance, and choosing a size.
- Building your hair profile i.e., your hair type, hair structure, and scalp moisture. My hair type is straight, its structure is thick, but not coarse, so I chose medium, and my scalp moisture is oily.
- Selecting (up to five) hair goals My hair is quite voluminous, but when it comes to hair and lashes, there's no such thing as too much volume! I chose volumize, strengthen, shine, soothe scalp, and oil control, but there were plenty more options to choose from.
- Customizing your formulas As you can see in the photos, I named mine Function of Jen. There are three colors to choose from for both the shampoo and conditioner (next time, I'm choosing the pink for both - it's too pretty!), and six fragrances. I was torn four ways for the fragrance - white tea jasmine, sandalwood violet, essential oils, or cucumber mint. For fruit lovers, there's grapefruit hibiscus and passion fruit papaya. In the end, I chose white tea jasmine as jasmine is possibly my favorite scent in the world!
- Choosing a size The products come in 8 or 16oz bottles which you can purchase individually or as a set, and you can even mix and match sizes! Good news for those who, like me, go through twice as much shampoo as conditioner.
After almost a week of daily use, these are my thoughts: The aroma is an experience in and of itself! It's the perfect blend of white tea and floral jasmine; the scent fills the shower and makes washing your hair therapeutic. The texture of my hair has changed significantly - from the first shampoo, from root to end, my hair has felt nourished and hydrated. The conditioner reinforces this by locking the moisture in. I did wonder if the effectiveness of the products would cause my hair to quickly become oily, but instead, they seem to control oil by keeping my hair nourished and hydrated. And wow, does my hair shine!
I still find the products to be a bit rich for daily use, but all it took was an email and Function of Beauty are now working on adjusting the Function of Jen formulas to be more cleansing/clarifying. It's refreshing when a company works to meet my needs.
Best of all, they're offering $5 off your first order!
